Social Futures is a leading provider of regional community services in the Northern Rivers Region. Base BMS was tasked with the design and construction of a new hub to accommodate their staff and services following the loss of their premises in the devastating floods of February 2022.

Extensive client consultation ensured that the functional and aspirational needs of all user groups was considered, along with the desired aesthetics. Staff were adamant that the space must reflect not only the organisation and the various agencies but the Lismore and broader Northern Rivers social accessibility and inclusion, neurodiversity, culture and catering to the varied needs of a generally diverse client group.

 

The layout is organised to optimise the natural light and create clear and legible spaces for the various functions and for both staff and users to navigate. An open plan model enables the accommodation of the staff and the facilitation of greater connection between the teams with multipurpose rooms of varying sizes and configurations providing respite from the office for either quiet or noisy, or individual or team work as required. Further choice is provided by breakout spaces, the staff café and lounge, which once again offer the occupants with a variety of spaces to meet, work or be alone.

 

The earthy lush Lismore and Northern Rivers environment is reflected in the interior treatment. A warm and calm aesthetic is created through the use of colour, natural looking materials and an abundance of greenery. Carefully considered details such as wall panelling, feature lighting, signage and graphics, and artwork and accessories add the finishing touches to a cohesive and well considered scheme.

 

Despite concerns about transitioning to a combined hub and more collective work model in a large commercial space, both users and stakeholders are delighted with the end result. Close collaboration with the dedicated team at Social Futures was key to the success of the project, along with the commitment of the entire Base BMS team for the successful delivery of the new home of our client and their essential services.
